Movement Therapy
"We don't use our body to get into a pose; we use the pose to get into our body"
Yoga postures are only one part of the eight limbs of yoga. These physical postures help to realign the body into its neutral position by strengthening weak muscles and releasing tense, contracted areas. Being in optimal alignment eases pain, reduces stress of joints and increases strength, balance and flexibility. Yoga also helps to increase circulation and energy, improve immune system and respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Muscles are the pulleys that move our bodies. For a joint to flex or extend, one muscle (or more) shortens while another has to lengthen. For example, two well known opposing muscles of the upper arm are the biceps brachii and triceps brachii. The bicep contracts to bend the elbow while the tricep lengthens. The opposite occurs when you straighten the elbow joint. How you move and use your body most of the day determines where you will develop tense areas and over time can cause pain and change your posture. "Pain" is a signal that your body needs to move, or move differently. I can develop yoga sessions specific to your body's needs.
